Mark Millar On Starlight Comic Book Movie

IGN recently interviewed comic book legend Mark Millar, Civil War, Kick-Ass, to discuss Kingsman: The Secret Service, when they also decided to pick his brain on one of his comics soon to hit the silver screen, Starlight. IGN through out some suggestions and ideas on who could play the character’s lead role, Duke McQueen. IGN’s list of suggested actors varied from Liam Neeson to Kirk Douglas, which Millar commented on in his point of view.

starlightMillar also went on to talk about his inspiration for the story saying:

“When I was a kid my Dad used to have this old 35mm projector and we had a lot of the Republic serials – things like Flash Gordon and Commando Cody. I grew up with a real love of that – I must have been the only kid on my housing estate in Scotland that was really into this stuff. BBC2 were showing a lot of that stuff at the time too. So I grew up really loving 1930s and 1940s serials.

“I wanted to do a comic book that was an homage to that stuff. So what I did was I took the archetypes of the space hero – a John Carter, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon-style space hero – and aged him up. This guy had been doing these amazing things when he was in his 20s; he had these amazing adventures, like Buster Crabbe. But when he came back to earth there was no evidence that he’d done anything. The idea was that he comes back and has to live a normal life. He’s like ‘I saved that alien world!’ and people are like ‘Very good.’ There were no selfies then so you couldn’t really prove it!

“So he just comes home, becomes a mechanic, gets married and has kids. And then he doesn’t tell people about it anymore because he’s kind of embarrassed because nobody believes him. Then his wife dies and his kids move out of the house… and he’s a 63-year-old guy. Then one of those old sparkly rocket ships lands in the garden again and says ‘You saved us 40 years ago, will you come back and save us again because there’s a new problem?’ And he has to squeeze himself into his old spacesuit and has to go back for one last adventure. It’s kind of Unforgiven meets Flash Gordon.”

The screenplay isn’t even written at this stage, but we nevertheless took the opportunity to lob some names at Mark for Duke McQueen, kicking off with the actor that apparently inspired the look of the character…”

Possible Ant-Man & Captain America: Civil War Tie-In

Starlog has recently released some new information on how Marvel’s upcoming movie, Ant-Man, will fit into Captain America: Civil War. Starlog reports that the source of this information claims that he/she is close to the film’s production. Starlog reported on the possible tie-in saying:

“According to this anonymous party, ANT-MAN will take place alongside the events of AGE OF ULTRON, the fall-out of which will spur on the Superhuman Registration Act. While ANT-MAN is largely self-contained in nature, the references of the MCU will come from Pym’s past as a scientist for S.H.I.E.L.D. in the ’60s, having worked alongside Howard Stark, Arnim Zola and Alexander Pierce. However, in this flashback sequence, Pym will supposedly also have a run-in with a young military hot-head by the name of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, who Marvel fans have last seen in THE INCREDIBLE HULK as played by William Hurt.”

Starlog goes on to explain how this all comes together in Captain America: Civil War saying:

“The party goes on to say S.H.I.E.L.D.’s downfall in THE WINTER SOLDIER forced Pym into the private sector, which makes him vulnerable and essentially serves as catalyst for the events that follow in ANT-MAN. And according to the party, a shooting draft of ANT-MAN’s post-credit stinger shows the older Ross re-appearing to Pym, claiming he’d been sent by Tony Stark. When asked why, Ross allegedly responds, ‘Haven’t you seen the news? We’re at war.’

“The party also claims Ross will play a supporting role in CAPTAIN AMERICA 3, begrudgingly helping Tony Stark enforce the Superhero Registration Act and giving him military aid as Stark’s hesitant to use his own technology post-ULTRON. The party claims that rumors of Black Widow’s limited involvement in CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 is also true, as her character will be arrested for aiding fugitive superhumans in a power play by Stark (which will give actress Scarlett Johansson a break from the MCU to focus on her family), though the source says a potential Black Widow jailbreak in a future Marvel film may help bring Scott Lang’s Ant-Man into THE AVENGERS fold.”

Sony/Marvel Spider-Man Could Still Happen?!

We recently reported on an article from the Wall Street Journal that Sony and Marvel were, at one time, working together to have Sony’s Spider-Man join Marvel’s comic book movie universe. The article went on to confirm that talks between Sony and Marvel went South and the idea of Spider-Man joining up for Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War faded away. Well now, according to Latino-Review, the negotiations between the two titans may not be over just yet.

spider-man joins avengers picture comic

The site apparently has an inside source who relayed the following information:

“I can report that the deal Sony finally rejected was NOT a Marvel trilogy of movies that Sony would have control over. Instead, it was a co-production deal where Marvel and Sony would split future Spider-Man film costs 60/40 (Marvel paying the larger part) while MARVEL retained control of the Spider-Man creative property with the potential to have him cross-over into Marvel’s Phase films, like an appearance in CaptainAmerica: Civil War.”

The source goes on to talk about the bosses at Sony Japan aren’t very pleased with what’s happening. Latino-Review’s report goes on to say:

“What I’m hearing from my little birds is that Sony, the parent company, views Sony Pictures’s handling of the Spider-Man property as disappointing. Sony wants to be all about ‘quality’ films (actual one-word quote, not air quotes), and the Amazing Spider-Man movies have not been that, nor have the rumors of future films in the franchise. Sony Japan thinks the Marvel deal for Spider-Man is still on the table and they want to renegotiate as a return to quality, the 60/40 split can be negotiated and Sony Entertainment’s October hard-line stance of wanting creative control is now mostly moot in the eyes of the higher-ups.”

The site goes on to speculate saying:

“Wouldn’t it be neat if Sony’s ‘Spidey-summit’ ended with a call to Marvel, who made a call to Joss Whedon, who got a guy in a Spider-Man suit from ASM 2 to jump into those pick-up shots they’re shooting early next year for Avengers: Age of Ultron?… The world would lose [its] shit”

Could Sony’s Spider-Man be in Marvel Comic Book Movie Universe?

Marvel and Sony have had talks about having Spider-Man join Marvel’s comic book movie universe by entering into Captain America: Civil War. According to The Wall Street Journal, those negotiations went south. Apparently both Sony and Marvel/Disney couldn’t find both a legal/creative common ground to work together to include Spider-Man in the Marvel comics storyline. This is a real shame seeing as Spider-Man plays such an important role in the Civil War storyline in the comics.

It has been confirmed that Actor Frank Grillo will return for the next Captain America movie, but it has not been confirmed, officially, that his villainous Crossbones will be featured in the film yet or not. It would make sense if the character did seeing as he plays a major role in the final parts of the Civil War storyline in the Marvel Comics.

Grillo commented on the upcoming film saying:

“[Winter Soldier] was only a taste of what’s to come with the next film, and I couldn’t be more humbled and excited. They just kind of called and said, ‘What kind of shape are you in? We’re going to need a body scan.’ They scan your body so that whatever you wear fits like a glove.”

He also commented on the character, Crossbones, saying:

“He’s a badass. He is just vicious. I like the idea that it’s no holds barred. I love the physicality. We all know what Crossbones represents in his world.”
